Three Great Rail Materials

Posted on: 31 August 2018

If you are building a deck, you need to think about how you are going to design your rails and which material you are going to use. Many people want to use the same material that they use on the actual deck. However, it is always possible to do a different material in a different color if you want to create a two-tone style. For example, you could have composite wood decks with wrought iron railing. The material you have on your rails is going to be exposed to the elements and is particularly vulnerable if you happen to set a lot of things on your rail. For example, some people will put small pots on the rail. You might temporarily set cold drinks on your rail while enjoying the deck. It is important that you have a rail material that is water-resistant. Here are three of the best possible materials for water-resistant rails.

Bamboo

Bamboo is a great rail material because it has a beautiful natural wood look. It is also hard and performs better than most woods, even when it gets wet. Bamboo doesn't absorb water like most hardwoods do. Since it is not as affected by moisture, bamboo is perfect for any weather.

Vinyl

Vinyl is another material that is even more waterproof than bamboo. It won't absorb any moisture, so you don't need to worry about damage. It is easy to wipe away and clean off because of how smooth it is. In fact, vinyl is also nice because it doesn't stain as easily as wood. It is more like plastic, so stains can be wiped away with a wet rag or cleaning solution. Most vinyl products have a fake wood texture to create the style of wood, without having to deal with the maintenance.

Lumber

If you still want a natural wood railing, it is definitely possible to find all types of lumber. Obviously, lumber rails will need more maintenance. It needs to be painted or stained to help retain the water-resistant finish of your rail. But this can also be an advantage. In fact, vinyl and bamboo are not easily painted. Lumber can be painted or stained any color you want, and you can change the finish whenever you feel like it. This gives you a little more freedom with your style because you have the ability to change the colors of your rail.
